What it is

wxeditor is a free, cross-platform editor. As the name suggests, it focuses on one thing — editing — and pushes that idea further than most: source code, PDF/EPUB/CHM/Office documents, and images; files on your machine and files on remote servers, all handled by one application.

It is free in the literal sense: no license keys, no paid tiers, no activation, no feature walls. Download it and everything is unlocked.

The AI assistant: it acts, it doesn’t just chat

wxeditor ships with an agentic AI assistant — its defining feature.

It actually does things. It reads, writes, and edits files; runs shell commands; greps and globs through your code; lists directories; checks repository status and diffs. Every step is a real operation whose results land directly in your workspace. Files the AI has touched are clearly marked, and the repository view filters changes to “AI-modified only” with one click.

It works remotely too. Connect to a server and the AI can run commands and read/write files on that machine — remote ops, remote troubleshooting, and remote development in a single sentence.

It goes online. Web search, readable page fetching, and up-to-date library documentation lookups mean it writes code against current APIs, not stale memories.

It drives browsers and desktop apps. Built-in Chrome control (navigate, click, evaluate JavaScript, screenshot, read the console) and desktop automation (enumerate windows, click controls, type text, send keystrokes) let the AI take over repetitive UI work for you.

It makes plans. Complex tasks are broken down into a plan that is tracked and updated as work proceeds, and the context is compacted automatically so long tasks never lose the thread.

You stay in control. Five modes — Ask, Plan, Code, Smart Execute, and Full Access — from confirm-every-step to full autonomy. Sensitive actions require your approval (allow / deny / always allow), commands and directories can be whitelisted or blacklisted, and destructive operations like deleting files or committing are always gated. The reasoning process is visible as it thinks, responses stream in real time, and session history can be revisited and exported.

Your models, your rules. Multiple providers and models coexist: enter an API URL and key, pull the model list, and set context and output limits per model, with proxy support when needed. Teach it fixed workflows by dropping a SKILL.md into the skills directory, and connect any standard MCP server to extend its toolset without limit.

A serious editor at the core

Syntax highlighting for more than 50 programming languages — from C/C++, Rust, Go, and Python to Lua, COBOL, Verilog, and Solidity — driven by per-language definition scripts that also power code formatting. A hexadecimal editor covers binaries, while find & replace, code folding, multi-tab editing, configurable fonts, and word-wrap settings handle daily editing.

Documents and images, edited too

Built-in readers open PDF, EPUB, CHM, and Office (Word/Excel) documents with real layout fidelity. An integrated image editor handles crops and quick adjustments. Edit code, read the docs, fix the screenshot — without switching applications.

Remote, without the distance

SSH/SFTP connections make servers feel local: browse the directory tree, edit in place, and save — the file is written straight back, with an elevated path for permission-restricted files. Uploads and downloads run through a managed transfer queue with proper conflict handling. Credentials are encrypted with AES-GCM, and the key is generated locally and never leaves your machine.

Debugging, in many languages

gdb/lldb (MI protocol) covers compiled languages such as Rust, C/C++, Go, and Zig; Python runs under pdb; JavaScript under node inspect; Lua and other script backends are supported too. Breakpoints, watch expressions, and run configurations persist per project.

Version control, made easy

The Git/SVN repository view shows status, diffs, and history at a glance. Stage or unstage files, commit and push — and when the commit message won’t write itself, let the AI generate it from the staged diff in clean conventional-commits style.

Make it yours

Light and dark themes out of the box; a custom theme editor with hot reload on save; theme switching that follows the OS or the time of day; background images across the whole window or just the editing area; every shortcut editable; and a user interface available in 21 languages.

Runs everywhere

A native application on Linux, Windows, macOS, and FreeBSD, built in Rust on the Slint UI toolkit — fast and light on resources. All settings live in their own directory, cleanly separated from your other tools.

Free, unconditionally

No accounts, no subscriptions, no unlock dialogs. One editor for everything — that is wxeditor.
